Since I’m feeling so low, my darling chef asked what I wanted for dinner. Comfort food – something ooey gooey, I said. There wasn’t enough time for him to make his wonderful lasagna, which was my first choice. So I hauled out my other first choice (can you have two first choices?), which is always the mashed potato. I love the potato in any form, even raw, but mashed potatoes have to be among the foods of the gods. And leftovers (leftovers, that’s hilarious…) are so good shaped into cakes and dusted with flour and pepper, and cooked in a hot skillet in butter. OH. MY. GOD.
Anyway. So he made my mashed potatoes, and some nice crisp-roasted chicken, as I requested. Did I feel comforted? Yes I did, by the food and by him making it for me. Food and a sweetheart will do that for you. So along with a salad, this was my comforting supper:

i'll bet your dinner wasn't this great - look at the crisp skin on the chicken, and the lump of melting butter in the middle of those mashed Yukon golds, and yikes! Marnie. she's always showing up.
There are three other children in our family, even though Marnie is the one who always shows up in all the TWD posts. My oldest daughter Katie doesn’t tend to like pictures of herself (though I do!!), so I don’t have very many of her. My son Will loves to take pictures of himself – I have literally thousands – but they’re all arms-length photos of his nostrils, more or less.
Our daughter Anna is photogenic but I don’t have that many photos of her, either. I wish I did. But Marnie is a balance of a ham + dramatic in her photos, which makes her good for these silly things.
Anyway. Comfort food. Yeah.
You know I love potatoes! Perfect. I just mashed some too while the rib-eyes are on the grill…it’s only 95 degrees here so yeah we’re BBQ’ing.
That was better than my dinner! It looks amazing =)
Lucky you to have that darling chef!
You know what’s so funny, Cathy? When I asked him for mashed potatoes, I thought of you. I’m not even kidding.
And Isa, you have no idea how right you are. Thank you for stopping by and commenting!
[...] I know – that’s a HILARIOUS concept, but I’m not joking. Sometimes there are actually mashed potatoes left over, and oh so many things to do with them: you can shape them into potato cakes sizzled in butter to a [...]
it’s nice that marnie has that umbrella to block out the glow from that marvelous chicken.
and i agree–mashed potatoes are definitely among my top five comfort foods, but only when they’re saturated with milk and butter and salt and pepper.
